Voice, authorship and responsibility
AI can enter music at several levels: suggesting harmony, generating a vocal track, helping with arrangement or imitating a recognisable performer style. These practices should not be conflated; each has different creative, ethical and legal implications.
Composition generation
A model can suggest melody, rhythm, harmony or structure. A person chooses the direction, develops the material and decides what becomes part of the work.
Voice synthesis
A synthetic voice may serve as an instrument or narrator. It matters whose voice is being used and on what basis.
Performer imitation
An attempt to sound like a particular artist raises questions of likeness, consent and audience expectations. Technical similarity is not permission.
Editing and release
Arrangement, lyrics, mixing, take selection and the decision to publish remain part of authorship even when individual elements were suggested by a model.
Where the human remains
Authorship is not limited to the initial prompt. It is shaped by intent, selection, a sequence of decisions and willingness to stand behind the finished recording. The greater the role of generated material, the more important it is to document the creative process and avoid attributing human experience to a system.
The official Suno release notes show how quickly tools for music creation and voice work are changing. A feature description does not automatically answer questions about rights, consent or the status of a particular recording. Those questions must be addressed separately before publication or commercial use.
A responsible track workflow
Define the task
Decide whether the tool is needed for composition, a vocal sketch, arrangement or post-production.
Review source rights
Separate original and licensed material from any voice or likeness whose use requires consent.
Keep creative control
Record which options were selected, changed and combined by people.
Disclose the result clearly
Do not imply that a particular performer took part in a recording without evidence.
