What happened

Google Research published a report from the Contextual Agent Privacy and Security Workshop, focused on privacy and security for autonomous agents. More than 50 academic and industry leaders contributed to the work.

How it works

The authors treat an agent as a system rather than an isolated model: it can access personal data, invoke tools, and must respect norms that depend on context. Protection therefore requires coordinated work at the system, model, user, and ecosystem levels.

Context

For products, that means defining access boundaries in advance, checking whether actions are appropriate, and recognizing that the same request can carry different risks in different settings. The report is a map of research problems, not a security certification.

Why it matters

An autonomous agent requires analysis of purpose, permissions, and leaks across tool chains, not only where data is stored.
